Cargo bin mural is an Eagle Scout project
The beautiful mural on the side of the church storage cargo bin in our 6th St. parking lot is the creation of Boy Scout Roman Young, a member of Wesley Church’s Boy Scout Troop 201, as his Eagle Scout service project. A requirement to earn the rank of Eagle, the highest rank of Scouting, is to manage and complete a substantial service project benefiting a non-profit organization. Over 30 Eagle Scout service projects over the past 40 years have benefitted Wesley Church, including landscaping projects, building our table and chair carts and our patio benches, and more. Our church Board of Trustees administers Eagle service projects benefitting our church, making sure Eagle service projects are safe, durable, with a concern for maintainability.
Scout Roman states that he designed the mural “to represent the values of Wesley Church such as hope, love, and inclusivity.” He says he hopes that the design “will inspire creativity and joy to the surrounding area.” Roman researched paints and techniques for painting murals on metal surfaces, and consulted several muralists in San Jose. Over eight workdays during last April and May, he directed the work of Scouts to wash and prime the bin, sketch the mural outlines onto the surface, paint and then seal with anti-graffiti varnish.
Our Board of Trustees worked with Roman on the mural design, showing Wesley Church as welcoming all to our Reconciling Church with a path to our doors and a rainbow above. The BOT also expects that the mural will deter graffiti on that cargo bin, which has been tagged by vandals continually ever since it was acquired, and which required our Tuesday Repair Crew to paint out the graffiti each time.
Many years ago, Todd Soo-Hoo took this prescient photograph. Without knowing it, Scout Roman Young created his mural with the same themes because he understood that Wesley Church welcomes all. Wesley Church thanks Roman and all the Eagle Scouts through the years whose Eagle Scout service projects have benefitted our church.
