Boy Scout & Cub Scout
Boy Scout Troop 201, Cub Scout Pack 201
2023 saw our Boy Scout and Cub Scout meetings and events blossom fully back to pre-covid activities, with Scouts and parents practicing masking and quarantining as necessary. The classrooms, Fellowship Hall, and patio again ring with happy Cub Scout voices, and Boy Scout voices, serious and having fun too.
Scoutmaster Tom Oda, along with BSA-trained parent Assistant Scoutmasters have guided Troop 201 Boy Scouts in the planning of opportunities to learn and practice goals of leadership, life skills, outdoor and physical fitness, service projects for Wesley Church and other non-profit organizations.
Troop 201 Scouts have helped as fully 1/3 of the number of workers at Church Clean-Up Day, with Wesley Church Mochitsuki set-up and clean-up, with canned food and used clothing collection for ComPassion Ministry and BSA Council programs, and, on troop meeting nights they have set up tables and chairs for numerous church programs and funeral receptions in the Fellowship Hall. Two Scouts completed their Eagle Scout service projects to benefit Wesley Church - installation of new landscaping in front of church offices on 5th St; replacing the parsonage front yard lawn with drought tolerant landscaping.
This summer our Boy Scouts attended their annual BSA summer camp at BSA Emerald Bay Summer Camp on Santa Catalina Island, where activities like ocean kayaking, canoeing, and scuba are possible along with many merit badge studies including First Aid, Orienteering, and Citizenship in the Community.
Cubmaster Tina Urata has organized her Cub Scout Pack 201 families to support activities including camp cooking, knot-tying, tent set-up, carpentry, first aid, and the most popular event - the annual Pinewood Derby.
Tom Oda has spearheaded a continuing effort to invite new families to the Troop and Pack with information tables at Nikkei Matsuri, and at Grant Elementary School Back to School Night. There are two Grant School families who have joined our Cub Scout Pack, and more families who have asked for information.
Our Scouts look forward to another year of growing in character, learning new skills, and service to others.
